The T.S. "Rajendra"
was commissioned in April, 1972 by the Vice President of India,
Mr. G. S. Patak. This ship was built by the Hindustan Shipyard
Ltd. and had a capacity to accommodate 250 cadets at a time. In
a two year course, thus 125 cadets a year could be trained a year.
In the year January, 1978, the T. S. "Rajendra" celebrated Golden
Jubilee of the commencement of maritime training in India. The
"Rajendra" continued to render
good service till it was also decided to replace her with a shore
academy. Consequently on 5th April, 1993, the T. S. "Chanakya"
at New Mumbai took over the responsibility of training maritime
personnel from T. S. "Rajendra".
After
"Rajendra" was launched in April 1971, a request
was made to the Nomenclature Committee" of the Indian Navy
to Suggest a suitable design for the "Rajendra" crest.Based
on their suggestion and the subsequent modification proposed by
the Ministry of Shipping the crest in the picture shown above
was finally adopted in July 1972.
The pattern has the basic design of the "Dufferin" Crest
(details given alongside) with the following changes:
While the angular battlement of the "Dufferin" are 'early-Norman'
in appearance,"Rajendra" design shows them like the turrrets usually
seen in Indian forts. The upwards painted design gives the crest
a greater balance and liveliness. The sailing ship which represent
the eyes of the warrior are redesigned to be similar to ship
of the Chola period so as to synchronise with Raja Rajendra chola, after
whom the ship is named.
The name of the ship is carved in Hindi in conformity with the
Government's policy. The White anchor in the "Dufferin"
crest is changed to a gold one and the Dharma Chakra is made brighter
for better effect.
We're on the road
,we're on the road to anywhere,
With never a heartache ,with never a care,
Got no home ,got no freinds,
Thankful, for anything the good Lord sends,
We're on the road,we,re on the road to anywhere,
And every milestone seems to say,
That the road to anywhere the road to anywhere,
Will lead to somewhere someday
